3-D printer tackles extra-large parts

Modix MAMA The “Modular Additive Manufacturing Assembler” (MAMA) extra-large 3-D printer from Modix is designed to produce prototypes, final parts and molds for composite parts. It is targeted at markets that require large components, such as automotive, aviation and boating.

What’s new? The printer, the first version of which will be available in March or April.

Benefits Print volume. The version to be released this spring can create prints measuring 3.2 feet by 3.2 feet by 3.2 feet. Several different sizes are planned; the largest will have a print volume of 6.5 feet by 16.4 feet by 3.2 feet. Buyers of the initial version can choose between two different extruders, one using filament and the other pellets. Future versions could potentially employ up to five extruders. Additionally, Modix will deliver the printer in a self-assembly kit, which reduces transportation costs and offers more flexibility for where it can be installed.
